About Me

Hi, I’m Angela and welcome to Skye Direction Counselling! I believe in establishing a connection with a counsellor before determining if they are the right fit for you, so here’s a bit about myself.

I am a mother of three adult children and two fur babies. I was born in New Zealand and grew up in Bundaberg, North Queensland. For the past 20+ years, I have lived in Brisbane, Queensland. My adult life journey began with a working holiday in Europe before returning to Australia to pursue my qualifications as an educator and early childhood specialist. Throughout my career, I have immersed myself in various management roles, as well as the fields of teaching and adult training.

Over the past decade, I have embarked on a profound journey of self-discovery and transformation. This journey has involved mindfulness practices and completing counselling studies that I have applied to my own life. These changes led me to my recent significant lifestyle change by moving to a rural town in Queensland, allowing me to connect back more to my authentic self.

Reflecting on my career, I have found the most rewarding moments were in empowering others to build their self-confidence. I firmly believe that it is only when we have faith in our abilities, we can lay the stepping stones towards aligning with our true life purpose.

Through my experiences in education and working with individuals of various ages and diverse cultural backgrounds, I have gained considerable expertise in cultural perspectives. This unique blend of educational knowledge and life experiences, coupled with my belief in being fully present with others, has given me the ability to have a more holistic viewpoint and understanding of people’s needs.

I am committed to walking this journey with you and look forward to walking together in the right life direction!”

Relationship Issues

Relationship issues can manifest themselves in a variety of situations, including romantic relationships, marriages, friendships, families, as well as work or professional connections. Relationship issues can encompass a wide range of issues which can include but are not limited to;

  • Communication issues: You can have trouble understanding another person or have trouble expressing your needs, feelings, and thoughts clearly.
  • Conflict resolution: You may find it hard to settle disputes in a positive and healthy manner, which results in repeated arguments, resentment, or unresolved difficulties.
  • Trust problems: You might struggle with trusting others, feel betrayed or are harbouring suspicions inside your relationship with a significant other. These problems can make it seem as though the foundation and ties of a relationship are deteriorating.
  • Intimacy and emotional connection concerns: Can happen when we experience difficulty building emotional intimacy, showing vulnerability, and making strong emotional ties with one another
  • Power struggles: Is when unbalances occur in a relationship’s authority, control, or decision-making resulting in sentiments of resentment, injustice, or unhappiness.
  • External stressors: This happens when aspects outside of our relationships have an impact on us, such as monetary difficulties, stress at work, interpersonal disputes, or health concerns.
  • Conflicting expectations: Is about when issues occur around the roles, shared tasks and obligations that we assign ourselves according to our identified gender in relationships.
  • Co-dependency Issues: Is when we find ourselves having an unhealthy reliance on another person in which one or both people have difficulty establishing boundaries, exercising their own judgment, and preserving their sense of identity outside of the relationship.

These are but a few instances and relationship problems can differ greatly based on the people involved.

Mindfulness Practices

There are many ways to deal with various life difficulties. Having practiced myself now for years mindfulness techniques I know how beneficial they can be when applying into my daily life. Mindfulness helps us learn to notice our triggers before they begin to spiral out of control and taking forms such as harmful thoughts, reactional behaviours, physical pain or unwanted and hurtful communication with others. Mindfulness teaches us ways that allow us to let go of our thoughts to remain calm, make better judgments and have more meaningful relationships by being fully present.

“ If it’s out of your hands, it deserves freedom from your mind too”

Solution Focused Services

What is Solution-Focused Counselling?

The main objective in solution-focused counselling is finding answers to current problems rather than focusing on the past with a more goal-oriented approach. Solution-focused counselling draws attention to a person’s assets and strengths, inspiring them to picture a day when their issues are resolved.

When can Solution-Focused Counselling be Beneficial?

  • If you are needing a more immediate fix for your issue rather than probing extensively into its potential root causes.
  • When you may be seeking a more brief intervention or prefer a focused approach to address specific issues within a limited number of sessions.
  • When you are ready to utilize your current assets and strengths and want to focus more on developing your confidence and moving toward your desired objectives.

Solution-Focused Areas can Include

  • Career changes
  • Life or living location change
  • Finding the right life path
  • Identifying work and life goals
  • Relationship goals

Although solution-focused counselling can be helpful in many circumstances, it might not be appropriate for everyone or for every presenting issue. The best counselling approach for you should be chosen after consultation to consider your current situation, individual needs and preferences.
